Penders by Roy Grounds

roy grounds the barn 1965 journal
Penders was a 544 acre plot of land previously owned by Roy Grounds and Kenneth Myer. Ken was a patron of Roy Grounds and they both built beach houses on this extraordinary beach side location north of Merimbula. Ken’s is a little more domestic but still atypical and can be rented now through the NSW Parks department. Roy’s structure ‘The Barn’ pictured above, was very experimental and is totally cool, apparently he built this himself with the help of some locals in 1965. It was probably only suitable at certain times of the year as it’s basically a tent on steroids. Thanks to our good friend Giles Ellingworth for showing us this pristine spot, I don’t think he realised the significance of the building until he saw my excitement. Roy and Ken donated the land and the structures in 1979 and they now form part of Mimosa Rocks National Park, its so worth the trip and this is where we will be again this summer.
